About 13,000 Gallons of Fuel Removed From Tug
About 13,000 gallons of diesel fuel and lube oils have been removed from a tug that ran aground earlier this month along the Aleutian chain.
ANCHORAGE - About 13,000 gallons of diesel fuel and lube oils have been removed from a tug that ran aground earlier this month along the Aleutian chain.
The state Department of Environmental Conversation says in a release that the fuel and oil have been removed from the Polar Wind with additional removal continuing Monday.
The Polar Wind went aground Nov. 13 on uninhabited Ukolnoi Island, about 40 miles from Alaska's Cold Bay.
Sorbent boom has been placed around the tug and its barge. A survey of the barge's hull on Sunday showed significant damage to the bottom and starboard side.
The state says nearly 1.5 million pounds of frozen seafood has been transferred to another barge. The seafood has been maintained at 15 degrees below zero since the grounding.
