PALMER - A legislative staffer has resigned after an ethics panel recommended her firing over using state resources to help an anti-Islamic group.

Rep. Shelley Hughes says aide Karen Sawyer resigned Friday. Sawyer had been the chief of staff to Rep. Carl Gatto of Palmer, who died earlier this year. Hughes replaced Gatto in the Legislature.

A legislative ethics panel found that Sawyer allowed an official with a group called Stop Islamization of America to use the Wasilla legislative information office and equipment for work related to his organization. It also found that Sawyer used state equipment to help plan activities related to a group conference.

The panel recommended that Sawyer be fired and never employed by the Legislature again.

A listing for Sawyer indicated the voicemail box was full.
