Back to School Drive Aims to Prepare Students for Class with Clothes
(ANCHORAGE, AK) - An Anchorage woman, along with the Polynesian Association of Alaska are teaming up to provide teens of low-income families with clothes that may help build confidence, but they still need a few more items to ensure teens are prepared for school.
Regina Manteufel of the Back to Work Network and Lucy Hansen of the Polynesian Association will hold a Back to School with Fashion event this Saturday. The event takes place at the American Legion Post 34 in Fairview.
Organizers have collected clothes and shoes for girls and young women to prepare them as they make their way back to school. They also have clothes for boys and young men, but are seeking help from the public to ensure they have a selection.
The Polynesian Association said they decided to assist in the clothing drive to ensure stronger ties in Anchorage.
"The whole community of Anchorage is a diverse community, and I think that everybody should come out and give a hand to help out. It is important to help others that need help," said Hansen.
Manteuful said her cause is near to her heart, and that any bit to help a child succeed will benefit our community.
"We want the teenagers to go to school and feel good about themselves when they take their coat off, they look good, their outfit matches, and so that they feel proud of themselves and don't drop out of school," said Manteufel.
The Back to School with Fashion event will be Saturday (8/18/2012) at American Legion Post 34 near the corner of Ingra Street and 9th Avenue, from 11a.m. to 4p.m.
Organizers say everyone in the community is welcome. They are still looking for new socks, like-new shoes, and boys clothes. Donations can be dropped off at American Legion Post 34 after 2 o'clock Friday (8/17), and are tax write-off eligible.
