Senator Mark Begich visited Alaska troops in Afghanistan and came back to the states with an optimistic update.

The senator traveled all over Afghanistan and visited with Fort Wainwright's 1/25th Striker brigade team.

He said that the Afghan people have become much more supportive of their army.

Over 300,000 Afghan security forces have been trained and have begun to take care of their own incidents.

The senator said that their security is getting on its feet and has become more independent.

As of now, about 90,000 American troops are in Afghanistan, but President Obama said that number will be reduced to about 60,000 by September.

The president hopes to have almost all troops out of Afghanistan by 2014. As of now, Senator Begich supports that deadline.
