ANCHORAGE- The 13th Annual Helping Us Give School Supplies, also known as HUGSS event brought thousands of school supplies to Anchorage's Sullivan Arena Tuesday.

The "one stop shop" event allows low-income familes and students in the Anchorage School District to pick up the items they will need for the upcoming school year.

For mother of four, Lynnette Cotner, the event helps ease some of the financial burden associated with getting ready to go back to school. "We'll be able to use the money we would have spent on school supplies to get those extra pairs of shoes and it won't hurt us," said Cotner. Relatively new to the state, Cotner said she was not accustomed to having to send an extra pair of shoes for her children to keep at school, something the ASD requires at elementary schools.

Doors opened at 9 a.m. but dozens had already began waiting outside at least two hours earlier. Over 5,500 students benefitted from this yea'rs donations.
