Heli-Skiing Guide Dies in Backcountry Near Haines

Troopers say Christian Cabanilla, 34, died in a backcountry incident Sunday on a mountain near Haines.

HAINES - Alaska State Troopers say a heli-skiing guide died Sunday in a backcountry incident on a mountain near Haines.

Spokeswoman Megan Peters says Christian Cabanilla, 34, was killed in the incident and two others suffered non life-threatening injuries.
 
Troopers were notified at about 1:13 p.m. Sunday.
 
According to reports, Cabanilla and two clients were traversing an area when the underlying snow gave way unexpectedly causing the skiers to fall. Cabanilla was found unresponsive by other skiers and transported to the SEARHC clinic in Haines where he was pronounced deceased. His next of kin has been notified.
 
The incident is under investigation.
