Iditarod XL has been a family affair. Dallas Seavey was crowned the youngest champion in Iditarod history and his dad Mitch crossed under the burled arch roughly 8 1/2 later taking 7th place.
Make way for Martin Buser and his son Rohn, they crossed the line side-by-side at 9:10 Thursday morning (3/15) to finish 18th. Just over 7 days after they were first and second front runners into Ophir.
"So can I get you to sign here, how come i'm on the second page?" said Martin Buser, 4 time Iditarod champion. "I have no idea, ran all this way trying to be on the first page."
Buser clocked in with a time of 10 days, 18 hours, 10 minutes and 12 seconds, and tied for 18th position.
Always quick with the humor Martin and his son Rohn, named after the checkpoint on the 1,049 mile trail, ran their teams down front street side-by-side.
4-time Iditarod champion Martin Buser joked at the finish line that there's a right of passage, the old man should finish first. But as the Buser boys made their way to the burled arch you could see Martin pull his team back a bit and was able to share a moment with his son.
They've shared a few moments this year when Rohn finished first at the Kuskokwim 300 in January. The Busers became the first father-son tandem to win that race.
They spent their 24 hour layover together talking strategy and breaking down key points of the trail. Rohn says he was able to soak in his fathers wisdom.
"We made up the you know, plan, if if we were at, going the same speed we'd be traveling together," said Ron Buser, placed 18th place in Iditarod XL. "You know if his teams faster or my teams faster, we wouldn't wait for the other one. We picked pretty even teams, um turns out really even teams. So uh, it's pretty neat."
