Park Service Wants to Open More of Denali Road
The National Park Service wants to plow the first 12 miles of the Denali Park Road in colder months on a trial basis starting next winter.
FAIRBANKS - The National Park Service wants to plow the first 12 miles of the Denali Park Road in colder months on a trial basis starting next winter.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says the goal of the mid-February to April plowing would be to increase opportunities for winter visitors at Denali National Park and Preserve.
Currently, only the first three miles of the 92-mile road are kept open during winter.
In an environmental assessment released Thursday, the Park Service says the proposal is the agency's preferred alternative of four.
Other alternatives include maintaining the status quo of plowing to park headquarters at mile 3, plowing the road for the full winter season and plowing the road starting in mid-January.
Public comments on the environmental assessment are being taken through March 16.
