Anchorage police arrested a man in midtown today, after detectives said he shot his mother in his apartment located near Tudor Road and Bering Street. The short-lived standoff lasted for about an hour, after the suspect surrendered to police.

Police arrested 29-year-old Anchorage resident Paino Alvarez-Perdomo a little before 3 p.m. He was charged with 1st degree assault and 3rd degree weapons misconduct.

Police received the initial 911 call just after two o'clock this afternoon. Police were notified of an injured woman shot in the abdomen, waiting in the parking lot of the Golden Corral Restaurant.

"A family member was able to make the 911 call, so I believe she has at least four children. There was apparently a daughter with her," APD Spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker.

The call led back to the Arctic Sun Apartments only a few blocks away. Witnesses said the victim walked to the parking lot from the apartments. The victim's son Paino Alvarez-Perdomo was responsible for the shooting.

"He came out ultimately, willingly when the police asked him to come out," said Lt. Parker.

One neighbor Elton Williams said he thought he heard the shooting from his open window across the street.

"I heard what sounded like possible gunshots. They sounded muffled, maybe. I also heard what I thought might have been kids, but it could have been a woman gurgling, just screaming, running up and down the street," said Williams.

Williams said he did not think much of the shooting, because the neighborhood is relatively quiet. Even with the shooting he regards it as an isolated incident.

"Unfortunate events like this can happen anywhere. It shouldn't scare people. People shouldn't run from this kind of thing--just be more cautious and obey the law," said Williams.

About 15 patrol officers and SWAT team members surrounded the apartment complex after the shooting occurred.

"There's lots of things you gotta work out. It's not a one size fits all response, but the very first thing we're gonna do is if we can get to the victim, address their needs, then we start looking for the suspect and protecting the crime scene," said Anchorage Police Chief Mark Mew.

In this case, the crime scene and the victim were less than a few blocks away, making it less complicated. Chief Mew said this shooting incident ended controlled and calmly.

"A lot of what we do is reacting to the adversary, and in a couple of cases in the last six or eight weeks, we haven't had the luxury of time. Today we had some time, and we put it to our best use," said Chief Mew.

Police are still investigating why Alvarez-Perdomo shot his mother.

Police say the victim was released this evening in good condition. There was only a single, non-life threatening bullet wound to the torso.

Alaska court records show Alvarez-Perdomo has multiple driving citations and a few criminal offenses. His bail is set at $10,000 cash with a third-party custodian. Alvarez-Perdomo is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
