Officials responded to 2 separate animal cruelty cases over the weekend.

At least 2 men have been arrested, 50-year-old Daniel Hoffman and 46-year-old Lester Mendez.

Thirty nine dogs and over 40 parakeets were taken from an eagle river home and about 20 cats from a car outside of an industrial building in Anchorage.

All the animals were brought to Animal Control in Anchorage.

Due to the large number of animals, the need for donations is higher than normal.

When the animals were found, the dog kennels were stacked to the ceiling and their were 4 inches of feces in some places.

Currently, animal control is evaluating each animal's health states with veterinarians.

None of the animals from those incidents are ready to be adopted yet.

"What really takes the longest in placing these animals in homes is the legal process," said Brooke Taylor of Animal Control. "These people are innocent until proven guilty. We have to wait until the court makes us full custodians of these animals before we can consider placing them anywhere."

Anyone who sees questionable situations animals, contact Anchorage Animal Care and Control Center at 343-8138.
