ANCHORAGE - Friday (8/2), Dimond High hosted the third annual 'Smart Girls Rock'.

This event, a collaboration between Dimond High and 'Project Lead the Way', is aimed at educating young women about various engineering professions.

Sixty freshman and sophomore girls attended the workshop and were able to interact with female engineers in small groups.

Of all engineering graduates, nationwide, only 19 percent are female. Programs like 'Smart Girls Rock' hope to encourage more girls to take an interest in engineering and thereby narrow the gender gap in this profession.

Dimond High also has an engineering academy where would-be engineers begin building the foundations of their education.
