U.S.S.Anchorage Arrives In Its Namesake City
ANCHORAGE- Navy's new warship, named after the states largest city arrived at the Port of Anchorage, Wednesday morning.
The 684 foot San Antonio Class Amphibious Transport Dock ship houses a crew of 750. The LPD-23 is used for maritime security, support landing operations and provide disaster assistance.
Originally scheduled to spend two weeks in the last frontier, due to federal sequestration the ship will now be in Anchorage for four days.
"I received my orders back in 2010 and we built from there and getting assigned to Anchorage, coming to Alaska has been a life long dream of mine and many of the crew," said Capt. Joel Stewart after arriving at the city's port.
The ship is open to the public on May 2 from 1p.m. to 8 p.m. and May 3 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Due to port security, those who wish to tour the ship must meet at either the Northway Mall in East Anchorage or the Sears Mall in midtown. Shuttle buses will gather visitors every 15 minutes at both of those locations.
