COASTAL TELEVISION TO GCI SUBSCRIBERS:  HERE’S HOW TO GET YOUR TV CHANNELS BACK AND AVOID GCI’S INFERIOR AK CORE TV PRODUCT

Anchorage, AK— GCI has continued to hold their subscriber’s hostage for nearly a month by refusing to reconnect Coastal Television Broadcasting Holdings LLC and certain of its affiliates (“Coastal”) FOX, ABC and The CW broadcasts to its channel lineup. GCI subscribers paid for these channels and they should receive them. Without FOX, ABC and The CW, GCI’s product is significantly inferior and will remain so with their launch of AK Core TV.

Over the course of the last month, Coastal has collected contact information from approximately 10% of GCI’s Alaska subscriber. These subscribers signed a petition demanding to have their channels reconnected. Unfortunately, negotiations are at an impasse because GCI has refused to negotiate in good faith. Due to this, it is time to look for solutions outside of GCI.

Over the course of the next week, Coastal will begin to email the approximately 10% (and growing), list of dissatisfied CGI customers with links to sign up with GCI competitors, DirectTV and Dish Network. Both providers have all channels customers currently receive, as well as the Coastal channels disconnected by GCI.

“It’s unfortunate we have reached this situation” said Coastal COO Scott Centers. He continued, “GCI subscribers have missed some of the biggest NFL playoff games, their favorite TV shows, and more. With GCI unwilling to have meaningful negotiations, it is simply time for their subscribers to move to a provider who will give them the channels they paid for and deserve.”

Coastal will continue collecting contact information from GCI subscribers and ensure each know they have options outside of GCI. Coastal looks forward to having viewers from GCI back on board, under a new provider, and no longer missing our quality programming.

GCI Cut Subscribers’ Access to Local Alaska TV Stations. This is the Real Reason It Happened.

GCI Cable is determined to pump more profits into their billion-dollar corporation. Unfortunately, they are willing to do so at the expense of their subscriber base.

By now, GCI subscribers are painfully aware they no longer have the local FOX, ABC, or The CW channels. For GCI subscribers, this means they are missing the NFL playoffs, important local news, Dancing with the Stars, The Masked Singer, Riverdale, and all the other programs and shows exclusive to these three networks.

Your Alaska Link is the home to all three of these channels. Until 5:00 PM on January 1st, all three stations were live on air for GCI subscribers. After months of ongoing negotiations with GCI to renew our contract, they abruptly terminated carriage without warning.

Why would GCI cut access to these channels and therefore block access to the shows and programs their subscribers paid to receive? Money. It is really that simple.

GCI demanded we reduce our current rate by almost 30%. A reduction that large would drive our small businesses out of business. It would be impossible for us to continue offering our TV stations that provide a core service to all Alaskans. We have done everything possible to keep ourselves on the GCI lineup. However, we cannot allow our small businesses to be bankrupted by a billion-dollar corporation trying to improve their bottom line.

To add insult to injury, GCI initially claimed we removed our channels because we did not receive a 40% rate increase. This is blatantly false. They are playing games that are typical of billion-dollar corporations when dealing with small businesses like Your Alaska Link. They are trying to starve us into submission. They can sit on their billions while denying us a conduit to deliver our channels to their subscribers, therefore drying up our ability to produce the revenue required to keep our businesses afloat.

GCI’s continued false claims, made to this newspaper and others, are astonishing. Their latest false claim that they offered Your Alaska Link an increase of $5 million for a total of $13.5 million completely lacks candor. If true, we would be signing paperwork right now. Incidentally, this would be a 59% percent increase from our previous contract. Read that again. It simply does not add up. On one hand they claim they were protecting you against a 40% increase, on the other hand they claim to have offered a 59% increase. They have either not read their own contract proposals, or they simply have misled their Alaskan subscribers with their lack of candor. Corporate greed has no boundaries.

Your Alaska Link did not abandon our viewers, we were cut off. We will do everything in our power to be reconnected and back in your living rooms, providing the same great programming we have been proud to deliver for years.

Over the past week, we have been running a large-scale social media ad campaign targeting GCI subscribers to let them know what really happened. The response has been overwhelming. Nearly 10% of GCI’s Alaskan subscriber base have already signed our petition demanding GCI put our channels back on. And the momentum of subscriber discontent is accelerating. It is past time for GCI to stop playing games with their customers’ channel lineup by giving them the programming they paid to receive.

GCI: The people of Alaska deserve better. Do the right thing. Reconnect our local FOX, ABC, and The CW channels.

Scott Centers is the COO of Your Alaska Link and a 10-year Alaska resident.

GCI INTENTIONALLY MISLEADS CABLE SUBSCRIBERS. DEMANDS

ALMOST 30% RATE REDUCTION FROM ALASKAN TV CHANNELS

Anchorage, AK— GCI continues to mislead their cable subscribers regarding the ongoing negotiations with Coastal Television Broadcasting Holdings LLC and certain of its affiliates (“Coastal”).

GCI has made misleading claims to local news as well as on social media. They continue to falsely claim they disconnected Coastal channels due to a rate increase from Coastal. This could not be further from the truth. In fact, GCI has demanded Coastal agree to a reduced rate of almost 30% from the previous agreement.

“GCI Cable, a billion-dollar corporation, is trying to bankrupt my small business serving Alaskans,” said Coastal CEO Bill Fielder. He continued, “GCI is attempting to starve our small business from access to Alaskan viewers by cutting the cord to all Coastal television channels while demanding we accept a rate reduction of almost 30%. This is simply not sustainable for our small business.”

While the rest of Alaskans are enjoying the NFL playoff games and the many other premium programming carried by Coastal’s channel lineup, GCI customers will be left in the dark. GCI continues to play games in an attempt to squeeze every penny out of an Alaskan small business to further increase their profits. Alaskan cable subscribers deserve better.

It is past time for GCI to stop playing games with their subscribers channel lineup by giving them the programming they paid to receive by reconnecting FOX, ABC, and The CW networks.

GCI CUSTOMERS LEFT WITHOUT ACCESS TO WATCH NFL

WILDCARD WEEKEND AND FINAL JEOPARDY! DUE TO DISPUTE

Anchorage, AK— Coastal Television Broadcasting Holdings LLC and certain of its affiliates (“Coastal”) have learned that Liberty Broadband, headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, and doing business in Alaska as GCI have left their subscribers with a very boring weekend TV line up due to their refusal to re-connect Coastal’s channels.

While the rest of Alaskans will enjoy the NFL games carried by Coastal’s channel lineup, GCI customers will be stuck at home channel surfing. This is the NFL Wildcard Weekend meaning GCI subscribers will not have access to the most popular games such as The Seattle Seahawks vs. The Las Angeles Rams or the Baltimore Ravens vs. The Tennessee Titans.

With its newly modified Skinny Offering of only two of five major networks, Liberty and GCI, on their cable and “Yukon TV” streaming offerings, have also blocked the final episodes of Alex Trebek on Jeopardy!

GCI is demanding Coastal reduce its current rate by almost 30%. Coastal would be unable to sustain such a drastic reduction. Unfortunately, rather than making an offer that will allow Coastal the ability to continue operating, GCI has put out false and misleading statements to confuse their subscribers even more. It is past time for GCI to give their subscribers the programing they signed up and paid to receive by re-connecting FOX, ABC, and The CW networks.

GCI BLOCKS SUBSCRIBERS FROM ALEX TREBEK'S FINAL JEOPARDY!

Anchorage, AK— With its newly modified Skinny Offering of only two of five major networks, Liberty and GCI, on their cable and “Yukon TV” streaming offerings, have blocked the final episodes of Alex Trebek on Jeopardy!  During a week when Alex Trebek called for kindness amid the Covid-19 Pandemic, GCI unilaterally and without warning snatched Jeopardy! from GCI subscribers due to its new Limited Cable Offering.

Coastal Television Broadcasting Holdings LLC and certain of its affiliates (“Coastal”) have learned that Liberty Broadband, headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, and doing business in Alaska as GCI fell short with its launch of its Yukon TV streaming service on January 1, 2021, by cutting access to the FOX, ABC and The CW networks.

GCI is demanding Coastal reduce its current rate by almost 30%.  Coastal would be unable to sustain such a drastic reduction.  Following is the excerpt of GCI’s email from Duncan Whitney, VP product management and development executive, to station management explicitly stating GCI decided to take away Alaskan’s rights to view our programming: ”…we no longer have an agreement that allows us to carry your stations so we will cease to do so as of 5PM Alaska Time today until such a time as we can reach a new agreement to do so.”

Coastal is disappointed in GCI’s misleading statements, their callous disregard for Alaskan viewers, GCI’s refusal to negotiate in good faith, and failure to restore FOX, ABC, and The CW networks to their lineup.

GCI ENCOURAGES VIEWERS TO SWITCH TO OTHER PROVIDERS

USE HULU AND YOUTUBE INSTEAD OF ITS NEW LIMITED YUKON

TV SKINNY BUNDLE

COASTAL AND VISION AGREE

OTHER PROVIDERS HAVE ACCESS TO ALL THE PROGRAMMING GCI IS MISSING IN ITS

NEW “SKINNY BUNDLE” YUKON TV LAUNCH.

Anchorage, AK—Coastal Television Broadcasting Holdings LLC and certain of its affiliates (“Coastal”) have learned that Liberty Broadband, headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, and doing business in Alaska as GCI is telling its customers to move to other video streaming services including YouTube TV and Hulu. Both offer programming from the Coastal and Vision channels. Additionally, Coastal and Vision encourage an immediate switch to DirecTV or DISH Network.

GCI fell short with its launch of its Yukon TV streaming service on January 1, 2021, by discontinuing its carriage of the FOX, ABC and The CW networks. Now its newly modified Skinny Offering has only two of five major networks. The FOX, ABC and The CW networks will all be missed by GCI subscribers due to Liberty Broadband’s new Limited Yukon TV Skinny Bundle.

As GCI’s management focus has moved toward Englewood, Colorado, its product focus has moved away from its Alaskan cable subscribers, by offering its Limited Yukon TV Skinny Bundle with no warning to its subscribers on January 1, 2021. GCI believes that it educated its subscribers with this move. They are correct. GCI educated its subscribers that it doesn’t give one Alaskan damn about its customers and seeks to enrich themselves on their customers’ backs.

It was GCI who determined to deprive Alaskans of the FOX, ABC and The CW networks. Following is the excerpt of GCI’s email from Duncan Whitney, VP product management and development executive, to station management explicitly stating and demonstrating it was indeed GCI who decided to take away Alaskan’s rights to view our programming: ”…we no longer have an agreement that allows us to carry your stations so we will cease to do so as of 5P Alaska Time today until such a time as we can reach a new agreement to do so.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 1, 2021

GCI Uses Their Customers As Pawns:

AS THEY TAKE DOWN 3 MAJOR BROADCAST STATIONS FROM THEIR LINEUP DEPRIVING ALASKANS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENJOY PROGRAMMING INCLUDING THE FINAL WEEKEND OF REGULAR SEASON NFL FOOTBALL.

Anchorage, AK— Coastal Television Broadcasting holdings LLC (“Coastal)” issued the following statement regarding GCI’s horrible decision to take down the entire Alaskan State’s ABC, FOX, and The CW networks from their lineup with no regard for their customers staying at home in an attempt to honor the State’s and municipalities leadership:

Late yesterday afternoon, GCI demonstrated a total disregard for their customers. During a time of an urgent and historical attempt by Alaska’s State and Local Leadership to ask every Alaskan to stay home and avoid going out, GCI took away 3 major Broadcast Stations leaving Alaskans with no warning to their customers from their lineup. This unnecessary move on the part of GCI has placed yet another hardship on Alaskans trying their best to weather the past nine months of staying at home and attempting to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic.

GCI’s heartless move was not necessary. The stations managed by Coastal and certain of its affiliates agreed with GCI to extend the existing contractual agreements in order to allow Alaskans to continue to view the ABC, FOX, and CW network stations within the GCI line-up; enjoy the high-profile programming available on each of these three networks; and view the playoff season of the NFL, College Bowl Games and high-quality prime programming.

Coastal and this station’s management remains willing to move forward and work with GCI on contract negotiations; however, GCI should immediately return their customers rights. GCI customers deserve to have what is rightfully theirs including ABC, FOX, and The CW network programming. GCI’s conduct and treatment of their customers repeatedly shows how GCI, now owned and headquartered in Englewood, Colorado, does not care about Alaskan’s nor their comfort and wellbeing. GCI continues to monopolize the industry and now that online and over the top streaming seems to be within GCI’s business model, they want to drive out competition, including these stations using your hard-earned dollars as their weapons.

GCI is currently spewing misleading information, stating that station management took away their rights to retransmit programming. Following is the excerpt of GCI’s email from Duncan Whitney to station management explicitly stating the exact opposite and demonstrating it was indeed GCI who decided to take away Alaskan’s rights to view our programming: ”…we no longer have an agreement that allows us to carry your stations so we will cease to do so as of 5P Alaska Time today until such a time as we can reach a new agreement to do so.”
