Stephen Patrick Middleton, 44, died Dec. 23, 2007, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle after a lengthy battle with complications for leukemia treatment.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Harrigan Centennial Hall in Sitka.
Stephen Patrick Middleton was born Oct. 14, 1963, in Sitka. He was a 1981 graduate of Sitka High and a lifetime resident of Sitka. Steve's greatest love in life was his daughter, Candice, who brought him great joy and purpose.
Steve's favorite pastimes included gun collecting and hanging out with his friends, camping, boating and riding ATVs. He also enjoyed keeping up with current events and one could always expect a rousing debate on recent political events or other important issues.
Steve made his career in construction, working the last 10 years with Western Marine Construction. He was a retired member of I.U.O.E. Local 302. Steve enjoyed his work and the opportunities it brought to work along Alaska's coastline from Atka to Ketchikan.
Steve regularly supported Ducks Unlimited, multiple sclerosis, cancer, public television and U.W. Children's Hospital. He was a member of the Elks Club for many years.
"Steve is remembered for his great enthusiasm for life, loyalty, and generosity," his family wrote. "He met very few people he did not like and regularly offered a helping hand. His optimistic nature prompted his life's philosophy which he summed up as, 'It's sunny and 70 in Sitka.'"
Steve is survived by his daughter, Candice Middleton of Eureka, Mont.; his sisters, Joni Middleton of India, Sandy Middleton of Anchorage, and Kim Middleton of Eastsound, Wash.; his parents, Esther (Ewing) and Robbert Nouwens of Port Orford, Ore., and Gordon and Judy Middleton of Anacortes, Wash.; his nieces, Mikayla Morgan of Anchorage, and Lindsay (Morgan) and spouse Spencer Lewis of Fairbanks, along with Steve's grandnephew Adrian Lewis; and many other relatives and friends.
His grandparents, Ralph and Hulda Ewing and Alfred and Vivian Middleton preceded Steve in death.
The family asks that friends willing to share pictures of Steve send them to Kim Middleton at firstname.lastname@example.org, and stories may be e-mailed to email@example.com
