Former longtime Anchorage resident Vallie M. "Mom" Hawkins, 87, died Feb. 4, 2008, in Jacksonville, Fla.
Mrs. Hawkins was born April 24, 1920, in Coushatta, La., to Walter and Hattie Lindsey. She moved to Anchorage in 1951 with her late husband, Dan Hawkins.
Mom Hawkins enjoyed sewing, singing, praising the Lord and spending time with family and friends. She was known by all as "Mom" or "Grandma."
Mrs. Hawkins retired from the civil service, working at the dining hall on Elmendorf Air Force Base, where she inspired and invited all she knew to church.
Mom Hawkins was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Hawkins; sisters, Mary L. McCray and Della Mae Bell; and brothers, Walter Lindsey and Melton Lindsey.
She is survived by her daughter, Wanda S. Tolbert of Jacksonville; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Thomas Jennings of Galloway, N.J.; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Titania and Warren Young of Jacksonville; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Joaquinn D. Sr. and Delina Tolbert of Seattle; grandson, Chaune' Jennings, and granddaughter, Chaia Jennings, both of Galloway; great-granddaughter, Tinaya Young, and great-grandson, Joaquinn Tolbert Jr., both of Jacksonville; and many nieces, nephews, special friends and loved ones in Anchorage and worldwide.
