Gilbert Clifford Nelson
"Captain" Gilbert Clifford Nelson, 56, died May 27, 2007, at his home in Seward. A memorial service was held at the Seward American Legion Hall on June 2 with the Rev. Lee Houston officiating.
Honorary pallbearers were Joe Nedwick, Bob Richey, Steve Nicholas, Ronnie Broughton and Dennis Isaacson, but Gilbert's burial at sea was canceled due to Mother Nature not cooperating. His ashes will be spread over Resurrection Bay at a later date.
Gilbert was born October 3, 1950, in Seward and graduated from Seward High School in 1968. He attended and graduated from several programs at AVTEC, including Welding, Master Mate Ltd., and most recently Business and Office Technology on May 25, 2007.
Gilbert lived with his family at the head of Resurrection Bay and outran the tidal wave during the 1964 earthquake. His beloved wife, Maranda, was a childhood friend who became his partner in 1990 and wife in 1999.
He was a commercial fisherman, working on the Seward scallop fleet for eight years starting in 1968. He was a crab fisherman from 1978-1982. He became a longshoreman with ILWU from 1984 until his death. He was a member of Northern Stevedoring Unit No. 60 in Seward.
He lived in Seward for most of his life, briefly residing in Hawaii and Unalaska.
Gilbert was a state champion wrestler while in high school. He attended the Church of the Nazarene as a child. He enjoyed backgammon, boating on Resurrection Bay, and reading. He also loved cross-country skiing and bicycling. He enjoyed cooking and having friends and family over for his barbecues.
Friends and family were the most important things in Gilbert's life. He loved the ocean and enjoyed many happy adventures in his boat on Resurrecton Bay with Maranda and their beloved dog Gus.
He is survived by his wife, Maranda, of Seward; his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Michael Cuffe of Ninilchik; brothers David Nelson of Seward and Donald Nelson of Soldotna; nephew Brendan Cuffe of Ninilchik; nieces Bridgette Cuffe of Ashland, Ore., and Danielle Barrett and Melissa Nelson of Anchorage; his Uncle Howard of Westport , Mass.; stepdaughter Iris Barrier of Fairbanks and stepson Jack Barrier of Anchorage; and his inlaws, including the entire Broughton family in Seward and the Nicholas family in Cantwell; .
He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and G.O. Nelson of Seward, and his faithful, beloved pets, dog Gus and cat Edie.
Donations in memory of Gilbert Cifford Nelson may be sent to the Qutekcak Native Tribe, P.O. Box 1467, Seward, AK 99664. A scholarship fund will be created in his honor.
