Anchorage Offers Incentives to Attend School
Anchorage school officials are embracing incentives as a way to get children to attend classes.
ANCHORAGE- Anchorage school officials are embracing incentives as a way to get children to attend classes.
The district has approved a business-sponsored contest that rewards students who attend class with no unexcused absences.
Students with qualifying attendance records will be eligible for prizes such as a laptop computer, airplane tickets, a trip to Disneyland, and for one high school junior or senior, a sport utility vehicle.
Lithia Motors, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, GCI and Pizza Hut are among the sponsors.
The district says school attendance is tied to student achievement but more than 40 percent of high school seniors over the last two years attended school less than 90 percent of the time.
The district says that means they missed more than 17 days of school.
