ANCHORAGE, Ak-- The Lorax says, "unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." Tuesday students at College Gate elementary are embracing the message of the Lorax and learning to care.

"So for our celebration for earth day, which is to just to call attention to the fact that we're all responsible for making the earth a better place, students in my second grade class were busy writing celebratory statements on little pieces of paper that we put on the lorax tree," Dona Helmer, Librarian, College Gate Elemetnary.

Each students statement begins with I will and ends with their own solution for making the world a better place.

"Some said going turn off the computer at night, going to not waste as much water," Helmer.

Earth Day started in 1970 teh same year The Lorax was published.

"We still have problems with pollution, so if we teach children to pick up paper, reduce the amount of  water that they use when they take a shower, to turn off the lights we're all saving the earth and making it a better place for all of us," Helmer.

This classic children's book makes these life lessons easy for second graders to learn.

"Anytime we can use a piece of literature and team it with social emotional learning we just make it a better richer part of our curriculum," Helmer.

Whether it's Earth day or any other day of the year it's important to remember the the Lorax's words, "Unless we all do something, just a little something, the world will not get better."
