Education rally planned for Capitol steps

Supporters of increased funding for education plan to rally on the steps of the state Capitol on Friday.

Great Alaska Schools is calling for an increase in the per-pupil funding formula known as the base student allocation. The group, in a release, says it is urging the Legislature to pass an increase in the allocation of $650 over three years. The group says this will help schools avoid staff cuts and catch up with rising operational costs.

A bill scheduled for the House floor Friday proposes an increase of about $300 over three years.
