FAIRBANKS- Fairbanks schools were closed for a third straight day Friday as interior Alaska recovers from an ice and wind storm that knocked down trees and power lines.

Up to 5,000 homes outside the city remain without power from the storm that ripped through the area Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Golden Valley Electric Association spokeswoman Cassandra Cerny says residents in outlying areas could be without power for several days.
The Fairbanks North Star Borough set up warming centers at West Valley and North Pole high schools. Temperatures reached the 40s Thursday but were forecast to fall to 5 degrees overnight.
School officials kept schools closed after determining they did not know whether enough bus drivers and food workers would be on hand.
