SEATTLE- Students at the University of Washington will be able to minor in Arctic studies through a new Future of Ice program.
It's an initiative to boost research and prepare students for changes in the polar ice cap.
The university is hiring eight scientists and faculty members for what will be the first Arctic studies minor outside Alaska. The university is spending about $1 million annually over the next four years for the program.
The university's Axel Schweiger says it brings together experts from diverse fields such as law, communications, policy and oceanography.
UW scientists have already won a $200,000 grant from Paul Allen to build an instrument that will float under sea ice to measure thickness.
