Senate Education considers Erin's Law
The Senate Education Committee Wednesday heard the Senate version of Erin's Law, an effort to prevent childhood sexual abuse.
Senate Bill 216, sponsored by Sen. Lesil McGuire, a Republican from Anchorage, calls on school districts to develop age-appropriate sexual abuse and prevention for kindergarten through 12th grade.
The bill mirrors House bill 233, sponsored by Rep. Geran Tarr, a Democrat from Anchorage, which was moved by the House Education Committee last week.
Concerns were raised Wednesday on the portion of the bill allowing parents to have their children not participate in the program.
Sen. Berta Gardner, a Democrat from Anchorage, felt it was a program students should participate in.
The bill remains in committee.
