State board adopts school performance regulation
The state Board of Education has approved a regulation to ease performance standards for small schools and alternative high schools.
Last year, the department of education adopted the Alaska School Performance Index, which rates public schools by stars. Five stars is the highest possible rating, one star the worst. But the reports say the department found small schools and alternative schools had difficulty meeting the standards.
State board members believed the index was unfairly penalizing schools with challenges that other schools don't have and unanimously approved exceptions to the index for those schools last week.
The regulation increases the part of the alternative school ratings based on improvement and reduces the portion focused on graduation rates. It also changes the calculation of graduation rates for small schools.
