It was a record setting day for the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Reports say Sunday's commencement was the largest in the 92-year history of the university.

More than 1,430 students received degrees this year, and about 500 of them chose to take part in Sunday's ceremony at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks.

It also set a record for the greatest number of Alaska Native and American Indian students earning degrees at 248.

Alaska Federation of Natives President Julie Kitka was the keynote speaker and then was presented an honorary doctorate.

Kitka has been president of the largest statewide native organization in Alaska for 23 years.
