Anchorage, AK - Facing strong Democratic opposition, Senate Republicans have announced that they will drop the ANWR issue. According to a party spokesman, the strong opposition towards drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge has changed the caucus's focus to offshore drilling.

Alaska Senator Ted Stevens expressed his disagreement with the party's leaders when he said that an energy plan without ANWR would be a "non-solution."

Republican house leaders maintain that they sill favor ANWR as part of an energy strategy.

The goal, said a John Boehner spokesman, is to at least have a vote on the record. Boehner is the House Minority Leader.
