Supporters of the Pebble prospect in western Alaska have hired the state's current deputy commissioner of Fish and Game. John Shively, the Pebble Partnership CEO, said Ken Taylor will hold the title, "Vice President, Environment."

Taylor has worked for the state for nearly 30 years, and is also a wildlife biologist. Shively made assurances that he believed Taylor could take on the environmental challenges facing the project.

The Pebble organization has faced opposition from Bristol Bay fisherman and environmental groups. Opponents are concerned that the copper mine will ruin the wild salmon runs and damage the reputation of Alaska's fish.

Taylor said he believes modern engineering and environmental sciences should be able to design a project that not only protects, but enhances natural systems.
