Alakanuk Wins $2.2 Million Federal Grant for Roads
U.S. transportation officials say the western Alaska village of Alakanuk is receiving a $2.2 million federal grant for a road improvement project.
ANCHORAGE- U.S. transportation officials say the western Alaska village of Alakanuk is receiving a $2.2 million federal grant for a road improvement project.
Officials say the Department of Transportation money will be used to resurface, realign and widen almost three miles of roads made out of boards and gravel.
Officials say the project will connect residents to key community economic hubs, including the health clinic, village store, and tribal and city offices.
The award announced Thursday is part of a total of $17 million going to tribal governments in four states through the DOT's Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery 2013 grant program - or TIGER grants.
The tribal funds are part of a total of about $474 million in TIGER grants for 52 projects across 37 states.
