ANCHORAGE- Anchorage officials are trying to figure out ways to ensure that disabled residents have better access to taxi service.

Advocates say people with disabilities often have to wait a long time to get a cab. Some say that delayed cab services led to missed treatments or made it difficult to go out and buy groceries.

City officials are looking to make changes. A proposed ordinance would add two full-time inspectors to ensure handicapped-accessible cabs pick up those that need the service. Officials would also increase efforts to cite noncompliant companies and drivers.

The Anchorage Assembly may hold a public hearing to discuss the issue on Tuesday.
