ANCHORAGE - A high number of mosquitoes in Anchorage has led to a run on products to keep them at bay.

Hardware and discount stores across Alaska's biggest city have run low on - or out of - bug zappers, citronella candles, yard torches and other products designed to keep mosquitoes away.

Janice Chumley, with the Cooperative Extension Service, says mosquito populations are fairly high everywhere in south-central Alaska. The region had a wet fall, followed by snow that insulated the ground before it could freeze very deep.

Chumley said that provided the perfect overwintering blanket for insects.
