JUNEAU- The Juneau Assembly has refused to reconsider the renewal of a decades-old agreement that makes it easier for a potential mine developer to negotiate over reopening mine properties in Juneau and Douglas.

The motion to reconsider the resolution passed earlier this month to renew the agreement failed at Monday's meeting.

Assembly member Jesse Kiehl said he didn't believe residents had adequate information on the resolution or opportunity to weigh in. Kiehl was one of three assembly members who voted to reconsider.

On July 15, the Assembly passed the renewal resolution, which was an updated agreement between the city and borough and AJT Mining Properties, Inc.

Mayor Merrill Sanford says the resolution is aimed at exploring possibilities for mining on Douglas and in downtown Juneau.
