FAIRBANKS- A bear has found a way around bear-proof garbage cans, ripping the 200-pound receptacles off their foundation.

It happened twice last month at the Ophir Creek Campground, about 60 miles north of Fairbanks in the White Mountains National Recreation Area.

Bureau of Land Management workers have found the trash cans on their sides. The cans had been bolted to the foundations, but that didn't stop the bear, likely a hungry and strong grizzly, from turning it over.

The trash cans have lids that latch into place when upright. However, when they are knocked over, the latch is triggered by gravity and they open easily.

No bears have been seen, but signs now warn campers. It took two men to stand up the tipped cans.
