FAIRBANKS- Cross country skier Holly Brooks was at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks to recruit volunteers for the 2014 Arctic Winter Games.
Brooks, a member of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team, grew up in Seattle and never competed in the Arctic Winter Games. But athletes she has coached have taken part, and Brooks told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner that she has seen those athletes gain confidence from the experience.
She says competition and sportsmanship are important, but so is the cross-cultural understanding.
Brooks didn't begin to race competitively until 2009 and still made the 2010 Olympic Team. She hopes to take part in the 2014 Olympics.
