KODIAK- The Coast Guard has opened an operating base in Kotzebue as part of its summer patrols in the Arctic.
The base of summer operations in the Arctic is now in Kotzebue instead of Barrow.
The Kotzebue base opened last week.
It's a scaled-down version of last year's Arctic patrols from Barrow.
This year, only one helicopter is on call, compared to two used last year. The Kotzebue base, however, has access to C-130 planes, a cutter and another vessel.
The lack of major new drilling operations this summer means fewer ships in the far North. The Coast Guard has said significant Marine activity is not anticipated in the Arctic this summer.
