Communication Companies Announce Wireless Network
Two Alaska communications companies say they have completed a transaction creating The Alaska Wireless Network LLC.
JUNEAU- Two Alaska communications companies say they have completed a transaction creating The Alaska Wireless Network LLC.
The announcement by Alaska Communications and General Communication Inc. follows the recent approval by the Federal Communications Commission and comes with Verizon poised to expand in the marketplace. AT&T already has a presence in the state.
Alaska Communications will own one-third of The Alaska Wireless Network and GCI, two-thirds.
The presidents and chief executives of both companies, in a joint statement, said they believe the new network will provide the "fastest, most geographically extensive and most reasonably priced" wireless service for Alaskans, allowing the companies to more effectively compete.
Alaska Communications spokeswoman Heather Cavanaugh says it will take time to fully integrate the two wireless networks.
