WASHINGTON, D.C.- 40 students and chaperones from Alaska and Hawaii were sponsored by Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation to attend the 2013 Democracy In Action seminar.

The Democracy In Action seminar allows students from around the nation the opportunity to examine parts of the federal legislative, committee, and budget processes, as well as learn about lobbying and federal regulations. Students also have the chance to discover the media's role in covering these, all through site visits and guest speakers.

"The generous support from CICF creates incredible opportunities for America's youth to visit their nation's capital, and gain a greater understanding of U.S. government, politics, policy making, and the importance of being engaged and informed citizens in our democracy," reports Tom Crossan, Executive Director of the Washington Workshops Foundation.

Students spent the week doing hands-on research and preparation for the Model Congress on the final day of the seminar. To help them with their research, students were given the opportunity to meet with a number of Senators and Representatives in their states' Congressional delegations, including Senators Mark Begich and Lisa Murkowski, and Representative Don Young of Alaska.
