Cup'ik Artifacts Wind Up in Chevak Dump
Some community members in the village of Chevak are upset after Cup'iq artifacts wound up in the city dump.
BETHEL- Some community members in the village of Chevak are upset after Cup'iq artifacts wound up in the city dump.
Items like masks, harpoons and dance regalia were stored in a sod house on the Kashunamuit School District's softball field. Superintendent Larry Parker said the sod house had become a liability concern and had to be removed. He says they offered the artifacts to the city and tribal council, but no one wanted them.
Resident Earl Atchak said he wasn't aware of the fate of the sod house, and helped retrieve items from the dump.
He's upset that such historical records were discarded. He wants the Alaska Commissioner of Education to hold a community meeting.
Chevak is located about 500 miles west of Anchorage.
