Fairbanks Borough Rejects Armed Employees
The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly has rejected an ordinance that would have allowed employees to carry guns while working.
FAIRBANKS- The Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly has rejected an ordinance that would have allowed employees to carry guns while working.
Assembly members Thursday voted 6-2 against the measure introduced by Assemblyman Lance Roberts.
Roberts contends that not being able to wear a gun while performing duties in the municipal government makes borough employees second-class citizens.
The public hearing preceding the vote drew testimony from opponents and supporters.
Assemblyman Karl Kassel, the borough's former parks director, spoke against the ordinance.
He says one of his employees carried a gun before the current ban went into effect and it made other workers uncomfortable.
He says the greater risk is an accidental shooting.
