ANCHORAGE, Ak--- February is heart smart month. This time of year, health officials raise awareness to exercise.

"You really have to force it through no matter how you feel about it . Once you start doing it, you are super glad  that you did it," Executive Director of Alaska Club Adam Lonergan says.

Probably the hardest part? Accepting you need it.

" You may not notice or it's hard for you to admit, that you gained a certain amount of weight over a period of time, " Lonergan says.

Because heart disease is the leading cause of death among men and women, heart specialists say's easier to prevent than treat.

"it's easier to prevent heart disease than to treat it. We like to see people start at a earlier age aso we can prevent heart disease," Heart Specialist Thomas Kramer says.

Every year, approximately 600,000 people die from heart disease.
Doctors emphasize this time every year to do the necessary things to maintain a healthy heart.

"We recommend that people stay active, optimal weight, exercise 30 minutes a day. We like to see people eat a heart healthy diet, low cholesterol. We still recommend low sodium diets," Kramer says.

Personal trainer Adam say some folks might be confused about BMI, or body mass index.
He says you should concentrate more on BMR, basal metabolic rate.

"It gives you a better indication of your nutritional intake as the demand of the muscle versus the body fat that you have," Lonergan says.

Just as long as you follow these steps, will not only lead you to a better life, but a healthier heart.
