ANCHORAGE- State transportation officials say the state ferry Chenega will bypass Whittier as it travels the Cordova-to-Valdez route for at least the next month.

Transportation department spokesman Jeremy Woodrow says in an email to The Associated Press that the ramp in Whittier was damaged Aug. 30.

An electrical failure led to mechanical damage. It's been deemed unsafe, unfunctional and will require work.

He says they are looking at a temporary solution that will allow the terminal to be used while a permanent fix is made.

The Chenega will make round trips between Cordova and Valdez five days a week until the week of Sept. 26, when it will only sail four days a week, Sundays through Thursdays. That is scheduled to continue until Oct. 13.
