GALENA- A Yukon River village trying to bounce back after spring flooding last week is dealing with a problem brought on by a lack of electrical power - spoiled meat.

Emergency responders in Galena are asking residents to collect meat gone bad in refrigerators and freezers so it can be disposed of.

The road to the community dump is washed out but an incident management team plans to fly the bad meat to the facility by helicopter to keep it from attracting bears.

An ice jam dammed the river and backed water into Galena, a community of nearly 500 located 270 miles west of Fairbanks.

Residents are also addressing gas fumes, flooded fuel tanks and damaged foundations.
