Group Files to Clear Fairbanks 4
The Alaska Innocence Project is seeking to overturn the convictions of four men in the killing of a teenager in 1997.
FAIRBANKS- The Alaska Innocence Project is seeking to overturn the convictions of four men in the killing of a teenager in 1997.
The group filed for post-sentence relief on Wednesday for the so-called Fairbanks Four. It alleges new science standards will dispute a footprint found at the scene, and also challenges an eyewitness.
The group also claims it has a sworn confession from a California convict that he and others actually killed 15-year-old John Hartman.
Hartman was found beaten on a downtown Fairbanks street corner and later died at a hospital.
The four men convicted of killing Hartman were Marvin Roberts, Eugene Vent, George Frese and Kevin Pease. Their advocates have claimed the convictions were based on police interrogations and not physical evidence.
