KETCHIKAN- The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly is moving forward with a lawsuit against the state over school funding.

The assembly voted 4-3 Monday to take necessary steps to begin the process of filing a claim.

At issue the level of property taxes the state requires all organized boroughs to contribute to school districts.

Some see that as a constitutional violation since the required amount winds up penalizing boroughs for organizing, which backers say the state claimed wouldn't happen.

It could take the case years to resolve.
