Local chocolate shop prepares for Valentines Day
ANCHORAGE, Ak-- Imagine your first Valentines Day as a chocolate shop. And you run out of chocolate.
"I had no idea, I don't know what I was thinking. " Owner from Modern Dwellings Chocolate Lounge Zoe Oakley says.
With Valentines Day around the corner, one local chocolate shop owner says she's amazed every year how busy her store gets.
"Every year I am amazed on how many people want chocolate on Valentines Day,"Oakley says.
The employees of Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge run around the clock to prepare for their biggest day of business. Their creativity and innovative handcrafted truffles are their specialities.
"This is a good place, they have great chocolate. I really like it," eleven year old Cameron Lindsay says.
"I just want to go around and buy every kidn of chocloate," Cameron's brother Griffin admits.
" We are a local business. We are very much about that and we try to source our own ingredients as much as we can, locally, or through local companies. It's very important to us," Oakley says.
While Christmas is a busy day for the Modern Dwellers, owner Zoe Oakley says Valentines Day trumps all. And I can see why.
Zoe Oakley says with the shop opening 7 years ago, twenty five percent of her annual revenue generates from the days surrounding Valentines Day.
"This is definitely my week, this is my top week," Oakley says.
She believes her success is primarily due to her local ingredients.
Unlike her corporate competitors, her chocolate is free from pesticides, no preservatives and of course, locally bought.
"It's easy to say hey, let's use a local company that thinks of these things, " Oakley says.
Folks in Anchorage would stack this chocolate shop against any chocolate shop.
"Modern Dwellers could easily be a shop in the fanciness of New York. It's that good," retired teacher Kevin Lindsay says.
"It's our go to place for Valentines and Christmas and we like to support local businesses," Kevin's wife Dawn Lindsay says.
So next time you reach for that Herseys bar, remember there might be a safe alternative dwelling among the options.
