Longtime Valdez leader John Kelsey has died at age 93.

VALDEZ- Longtime Valdez leader John Kelsey has died at age 93.
The former Valdez mayor and businessman died Aug. 27 in Anchorage, where he lived in his later years.
Kelsey was known for bringing economic development to Valdez for decades, and was a key player in rebuilding the city after it was destroyed by the 9.2 magnitude earthquake in 1964.
Kelsey was born in Valdez on July 24, 1920.
Over the years, he served as the city's fire chief, city councilman and developer.
He was in the Navy during World War II, then returned to Valdez to help his father and brother run the Valdez Dock Co.
Kelsey was instrumental in bringing the trans-Alaska oil pipeline terminus to Valdez. He also served on the Alaska Permanent Fund board.
