ANCHORAGE - Searchers have found the body of a man who crossed mudflats between Fire Island and Anchorage and was swept away by the incoming tide.

The man and a companion attempted the crossing Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses at the beach below Kincaid Park told authorities the men were struggling to make it back as the fast-moving tide made it hard to walk and finally forced them to swim.

One man reached shore and was hypothermic but the other disappeared under the water.

Anchorage firefighters used jet skis and a dive boat to search for the missing man. Battalion Chief Mark Hall says a LifeMed Alaska helicopter also searched.

The 11th Rescue Coordination Center found the man's body at 3:28 a.m.
