FAIRBANKS- A 50-year-old North Pole man has pleaded guilty to dragging an Alaska State Trooper trying to stop him from driving away.

Erin S. Johnson pleaded guilty Wednesday to felony assault and failure to stop at the direction of a peace officer.

A plea deal calls for a sentence of six and a half years.

Troopers in September 2011 stopped Johnson at apartments in Moose Creek. Officers said he matched the description of a theft suspect.

Prosecutors say an officer attempted to pull Johnson out of his vehicle or turn off the ignition. Johnson drove off, dragging the trooper for 60 feet.

After a high-speed chase, Johnson escaped. He called troopers a day later and was arrested.

Sentencing is scheduled for July.
