ANCHORAGE--A 19-year-old man is accused of severely biting an off-duty police officer who was volunteering at an Anchorage soup kitchen.

Stephen Faigle is charged with assault and will be arraigned Tuesday.

Police say the officer, Joel Breiner, was volunteering with another off-duty officer, Patrick Martin, at the Downtown Soup Kitchen Monday afternoon when an argument broke out between Faigle and another man in the kitchen's patio.

According to police, the officers told the men to "break it up," prompting the other man to leave. They say Faigle became combative with the officers and bit Breiner in the arm.

Faigle's girlfriend, Nora Hanes, was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge for allegedly yelling profanities at the off-duty and responding officers.

Faigle's blood was drawn to test for drugs and communicable diseases.
