JUNEAU - An 1880s-era bicycle missing in Juneau has been located.

The penny-farthing, a bike with a 5-foot front wheel and a small rear wheel, disappeared last week from in front of an antique store on Seward Street.

The bike gets its name from "penny," and "farthing," two British coins that greatly vary in size, according to the Pedaling History Bicycle Museum website.

Owner Ron Vavalis says the bike had no pedals and whoever took it couldn't get far.

The bike was located at nearby Mendenhall Apartments.

A cardboard sign outside the store said, "Free." A resident of the apartments tells Vavalis he thought it referred to the bike instead of a pile of magazines and other items on the sidewalk.
