FAIRBANKS- Some communities hold home or garden tours. In Fairbanks, where home heating costs are a perennial challenge, residents can take an annual solar energy tour.

The event Sunday was self-guided and allowed participants to see how homeowners incorporate alternative energy into their heating systems.

The tour is sponsored by the Fairbanks-based Alliance for Reason and Knowledge and the national American Solar Energy Society.

Robert Shields says alternative energy can reduce heating costs and improve air quality.

One stop was the home of Phil Hueth, who uses a commercially installed 100-amp solar array and a solar thermal collector he installed using an old satellite dish covered with mirrors

Hueth says solar generation is worthwhile even though Fairbanks gets little sun half the year.
