ANCHORAGE- A 24-year-old soldier has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the death of her newborn baby.
Spc. Ashley Ard appeared in an Anchorage courtroom Tuesday to enter her plea.
Ard is accused of leaving her newborn baby to die in an Eagle River Park.
Authorities allege Ard gave birth in her Eagle River home and left with the newborn early in the morning of Oct. 15. A man walking his dog found the baby dead several hours later.
Ard was arrested Friday evening after a grand jury indicted her that day.
The Portsmouth, Va., woman is being held on $250,000 bond.
Her attorney, Rex Butler, said after the Tuesday hearing that the public should withhold judgment until they see all of the facts.
